Do You See What I See?

Behaviour Management Guidebook
Point of Focus: Self-Regulation

I’d like to take this opportunity to share my training with you: the parents, the caregivers, the educators, the grandparents, the guardians, and anyone curious about how to help navigate tantrums, meltdowns, and/or aggressive behaviours. My goal isn’t about waving a magic wand or guaranteeing instant success. My goal is to help you hone in on the subtleties of the (change in) environment, notice any patterns, see beyond the act or trigger, and focus on the cause right before the escalation. In this guidebook, I share alternate perspectives by providing tips, advice, suggestions, links, visuals, examples, and methods through my observations, the training I’ve received, and the resources I have accessed over the past seventeen years. First, understanding our own needs and wants means understanding the needs and wants of the youth. Next, I’ve learned that no matter how good our intentions are, our emotions have to be regulated in order to meet the youth where they’re at and help guide them to understand what self-regulating looks and feels like; it may start with taking the time to co-regulate with them. Finally, remember to give yourselves and your child(ren) grace as you navigate through what works best for yourself, your child(ren), and your family.
